CHOICE Review

Now available in its fifth edition, Walker's Mammals of the World continues to provide thorough physical descriptions, distribution notes, and information on characteristic habits, population numbers, and status, and to identify factors threatening wild populations for the world's (now) 1,116 genera of living mammals. About half of the articles show revision, some substantial. The "Literature Cited" section has doubled in length since the fourth edition (CH, Jan'84), covering a wide range of years, although references to Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia (1973-75) are still found rather than references to the five-volume Grzimek's Encyclopedia of Mammals (CH, Jun'90). Text additions and revisions in Walker's reflect current knowledge and understanding of taxonomic relationships and indicate pertinent commercial aspects. This is a reliable, informative, and often used reference source that would be improved by inclusion of a glossary in future editions. An important source for four-year colleges and universities and for major public library reference collections.-L. Bronars, Yale University
