All across the United States, from urban areas to suburbs and rural districts, children are carrying weapons to school--as many as 100,000 guns every day, according to a recent Department of Justice report. School Violence focuses on the current situation regarding violence in schools, including theories of violence, the availability of weapons to children, the legal system, and preventive measures, both physical and sociological, now being taken to curb and eliminate the critical problem of school violence.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 131-153) and index.

School Library Journal Review
Gr 7 UpThis series entry examines a critical issue in an effort to see where we as a nation stand on working to curb and to eliminate school violence. An overview provides statistics on juvenile violence from 1970 to the present and a discussion of potential risk factors in youth violence and various prevention strategies that are being used in schools around the nation. A chronology from 1968 to the present follows the prevention efforts of federal and state policy makers, health-care workers, researchers, educators, and youth-advocacy organizations. Biographical sketches are presented for people who have made a name for themselves in school-violence prevention. An examination of "Educational, Technological, and Regulatory Approaches" includes pertinent federal legislation that has been passed since 1994. A directory of organizations, conferences, and training programs serves as a guide to key resources as well as a starting point for an information search. A list of selected print and nonprint resources (including Web sites) serves as a guide to even more resources. Well organized and easy to use, this title will be a welcome resource for students doing reports on the subject.Dana McDougald, Cedar Shoals High School, Athens, GA (c) Copyright 2010. This valuable book contains excellent information on many important sources (from national statistics to organizations and print and nonprint resources) and on student and teacher opinions, the prevalence of risk factors (e.g., weapons, drugs and alcohol, gangs), and prevention and educational strategies. The author outlines federal and state-level approaches to prevention and lists statewide contacts for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and organizations to contact for further information. An invaluable sourcebook for upper-division undergraduates and above. Those interested in additional information will also want to look at Joy Dryfoos's Adolescents at risk (CH, May'91). M. F.
