Rather than take the more common body component approach to cardiovascular and weight-control exercise regimens, this book for personal fitness trainers and exercise specialists presents a prescription process model that personalizes counselling, assessment, and prescription for clients with regard to their unique body types, physiologies, and psychologies. Additionally, chapters on exercise for special populations and those with orthopedic injuries are included. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Includes bibliographical references (p. 249-255) and index.

CHOICE Review

Many individuals are becoming "personal trainers." This text--a first of its kind--is an excellent resource for them. Based upon a model that begins with determining needs, counseling clients, and developing a personalized exercise prescription, Griffin (George Brown College) covers all areas that are important to providing the "client" with the skills and tools necessary for developing healthy exercise behaviors. Counseling is offered for cardiovascular training, body composition, weight management, and musculosketetal conditioning. Guidance is also offered for special populations (overuse injuries, injury recovery, and patients with arthritis, diabetes, exercise-induced asthma, or hypertension). Suggested prescriptions accompany client scenarios. The text includes many figures, charts, and drawings to help the counselor provide the client with specific, individualized instructions for personal fitness. Personal trainers will find the text an excellent addition to their library. Suitable for general readers, undergraduates and students in technical programs, and professionals and practitioners. J. R. Morrow Jr.; University of North Texas
