Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This new collection of essays opens with a pivotal essay, not previously published, on the implications of the moral duties which arise out of concern for the well-being of others. The first part of the book concentrates on the consequences of two central aspects of well-being: the importance of membership in groups - the role of belonging - and the active character of well-being - that it largely consists in successful activities. Both aspects have far-reaching political implications, explored in essays on free expression, national self-determination, and multiculturalism, among others. Against the background of the moral and political views developed in the first part, the second part of the book explores various aspects of the dynamic inter-relations between law and morality, offering some building blocks towards a theory of law.

CHOICE Review

Raz's collection of essays (most previously published) begins with the view that "political morality" is primarily concerned with "promoting well-being." Seven chapters in part 1 trace the political and moral implications of this idea in matters such as rights, nationalism, free expression, and multiculturalism. Part 2, "Between Law and Morality," addresses a wide range of issues connected with law and its relation to morality. The arguments throughout both sections are carefully and reasonably developed and invariably shed significant light on the principles addressed. However, although the author notes that ethics must pay attention to "local conventions and practices," the notice given to sociological and political facts is rather thin. Raz generally defends an expansive notion of liberty for both individuals and groups. In a concluding chapter, "The Politics of the Rule of Law," however, he argues for the priority of "a pervasive common culture," a "culture of legality, or respect for the law, and a willingness to abide by it even when one loses by it." Upper-division undergraduate through faculty, professional. D. J. Maletz; University of Oklahoma
