Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

A novel with libidinous content, told artfully and with humor. It is a picture of mid-1990s communist Cuba

Anclado en tierra de nadie -- Nada que hacer -- Sabor a mí.

Publishers Weekly Review

Gutiérrez has been frequently compared to Charles Bukowski and Henry Miller for of his sordid writings. His short stories and novels depict the physical and moral decay of Havana during the '90s, while indulging in some of the most sexually explicit and eschatological scenes ever published in Spanish. But there is more to Gutiérrez's writing than sex, rum, and dirt. Originally published in 1998, this semiautobiographical debut about survival, despair, and hedonism displays the ugliest face of humanity, never trying to rouse empathy or pity. Pimps, prostitutes, and marauders parade through these pages. The narrator is Gutiérrez himself, speaking from the chaos of a decaying old Havana and looking for a bisnes that will provide food for the day-and, if lucky, also booze, a good cigar, and a woman. In the first two books of this trilogy, Anclado en tierra de nadie (Stranded in No Man's Land) and Nada que hacer (Nothing To Do), Cuba's ominous 1994 rafters' crisis dominates the landscape. The third installation, Sabor a mí (A Taste of Me), explores a wider variety of themes, occasionally using third-person narration to relate the stories of outcast habaneros. With misleadingly simple sentences, crisp dialog, and disheartening crudeness, Gutiérrez crafts a personal and identifiable style, which may not appeal to all readers. As he puts it, "Only an irritated, indecent, violent, and rude art can show us the other face of the world, the one we never see or don't want to see to spare our conscience the nuisance." You've been warned. Recommended for all bookstores and libraries.Carlos Rodríguez Martorell, Corona, NY (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved All rights reserved.

Spanish Review

«Una especie de caribeño Bukowski o de habanero Henry Miller» (Felipe Benítez Reyes, Tribuna). «Tan radical como Reinaldo Arenas y mucho más hiriente que Zoé Valdés... Impresionante» (Miguel García-Posada, El País). «Este libro es, relato a relato, un acto de rebeldía... Representa también el triunfo de un placer que va más allá de toda desesperación, sin negarla» (J. A. Masoliver Ródenas, La Vanguardia).
