CHOICE Review

Required reading for mental health professionals and lawyers, this outstanding volume surpasses similar forensic handbooks. It provides a comprehensive guide to legal issues commonly addressed by clinicians in courts, although it is not a manual of ``how-to.'' Ethical and constitutional issues in clinical testimony are discussed, and three broad forensic assessment areas are covered-criminal, civil, and juvenile/family. Traditional topics (competency to stand trial, sentencing, compensation for mental injuries, and involuntary commitments) and those not so traditional (delinquency, child abuse and neglect, and divorce) are examined in detailed chapters with discussion that draws on current relevant legal, clinical, and social science research literature. Two of the authors are psychologists (Melton and N.G. Poythress) with extensive experience in psychological evaluations for the courts; two authors are lawyers (J. Petrila and C. Slobogin) with backgrounds in mental health law. About 40 pages of sample reports are provided, as well as a useful glossary of legal, clinical, and research terms. Recommended for graduate students and faculty.-C.S. Widom, Indiana University
