CHOICE Review

Completing the translations of Orosius's extant works (his Historia having appeared in vol. 50, 1964) and including new translations of Pacian's corpus, this volume, together with volumes 62 and 63, provides an accessible English translation of Spanish Latin sources relevant to cultural and theological studies of fourth-fifth century Christianity. From Pacian, the least recognized of the included authors, his three letters to the Novatianist, Sympronian, his tractate "On Penitents," and his sermon "On Baptism" have survived. From the better-known Orosius, we have his "Defense against the Pelagians" and his memorandum to Augustine, "On the Error of the Priscillianists and Origenists." Well-documented introductions preface each author's work. As the translator concedes, the translations are quite literal and stay perhaps painfully close to the original syntax. Consequently, they may seem at times to be a minimal improvement over earlier translations of Church Fathers, e.g., Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace (1975). Even so, this text provides welcome English language access for graduate students to important but lesser-known contributors to the Latin church's developing response to some of the most disruptive theological controversies in the history of the early church.
