CHOICE Review

From the late 1960s to the late '80s critics of mental measurement took the position that statistically significant differences in the performance of various ethnic, gender, and social groups represented prima facie evidence of bias in testing. Although setting that position aside reflects greater understanding, it also substantially complicates the measurement task. If one acknowledges that some performance differences stem from factors other than bias, one must be willing also to look systematically at those possible sources of variability. Only then can measurement experts begin accommodating the differences in a way that neither compromises the validity of the testing data, nor penalizes the individual for differences that are irrelevant to the construct measured. Test Interpretation and Diversity is a very ambitious effort to analyze the issues involved in dealing with the variability stemming from construct irrelevant characteristics. They range from cultural and linguistic differences to handicapping conditions. The breadth of coverage and the attention paid to relevant historical antecedents and current testing conditions are bound to make this book a standard among those interested in mental measurement.
