CHOICE Review

Although it has undergone some change, this title follows the same format as the previous edition, Webster's New Biographical Dictionary (1988). For more than 30,000 deceased notables, the entry consists of the name in boldface, pronunciation, titles, dates, and a brief biography that focuses on career highlights. Previous entries are repeated without change; revisions consist of the inclusion of persons who died since the last edition. Although Salvador Dali, Richard Nixon, and Karl Menninger are examples of new listings, the same information about them can be found in other biographical sources. The guide to the pronunciation of names is worth the cost for libraries that have a small biographical collection and need a fairly comprehensive representation with up-to-date information. However, libraries that own the previous edition and have a good biographical collection will not need this title. D. A. Forro; Michigan State University

Booklist Review

Does not cover living persons. Broadest historical coverage, with more than 30,000 entries. Gives pronunciations for all first occurrences of a name, and provides a pronouncing list of name elements, titles, and prenames. Best coverage of not-so-famous dead Americans.
