CHOICE Review

Like its 1969 and 1979 predecessors, the third edition of Piaget's Theory of Intellectual Development is a very satisfactory exposition of his seminal theory of cognitive development. It is written by an authority on how children learn mathematics and a psychologist who studied under Piaget at Geneva. The authors give ample attention to the last period of Piaget's career, when he and his collaborators were ``engaged in a major expansion and even revision'' and ``produced new research and theory ... mainly concerning development and learning.'' There are still six chapters: a brief biography of Piaget and an overview of the elements of his theory; a chapter on infancy; two for the years 2 through 11; one on adolescence; and a short concluding discussion of ``learning development, and education.'' Most of the new material either adds recent findings or alters emphasis to accord with them. The last chapter reworks the earlier ``implications of genetic epistemology ... for education'' into a broad consideration of learning and development. The same clarity informs all three editions, no light accomplishment in the face of complex ideas and dense French. Selected references are chiefly to works and translations in English. This book is suited to undergraduate and graduate courses where Piaget is studied seriously.-F. Laycock, Oberlin College
