CHOICE Review

It is surprising that James Joyce has only just been added to this remarkable introductory series; but this volume is a welcome addition. After a preface and a short piece on Ireland's bards, the standard format of three principal parts is again evident: "The Short Fiction," "The Writer," and "The Critics," of which the first, by Brunsdale, occupies roughly half the text. In each case, the focus is on Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, described by the author as "revered twin pillars of modern literature." Part 2 consists of material drawn from such sources as Joyce's notebooks and his letters. Sixteen critics contribute to the third part, which is followed by a chronology, a glossary of Roman Catholic terminology, a selected bibliography, and an index. Complementing Sydney Bolt's A Preface to James Joyce (2nd ed., 1992), Brunsdale's study should remove much of the trepidation with which students frequently face Joyce. Undergraduate; general. J. A.
