CHOICE Review

James produced 112 shorter works, variously labeled by him as "anecdote," "tale," and "short story" (all of which are roughly the same in scope) as well as "nouvelle" (a longer work such as "Daisy Miller"). Several guides to this body of work are already available, notably Edward Wagenknecht's comprehensive The Tales of Henry James (CH, Jun'85). Whereas Wagenknecht mainly gives basic reference information about plot and character, Hocks has produced a work intended more to aid in the production of scholarly writing. More than half of this book is devoted to Hocks's own analyses of the major short fiction; a second section features excerpts on the short works from James's notebooks, letters, and critical writings; and a third includes essays on "Daisy Miller," "The Aspern Papers," "The Turn of the Screw," and "The Beast in the Jungle." Critics who believe, like this reviewer, that Hocks's Henry James and Pragmatistic Thought (CH, Jan'75) is one of the finest studies of its kind, will be happy to see that the first section of the present book is no less subtle in its discriminations. And students who have to write a quick term paper on one or more of James's short works will thrill over the entire volume: most of what they will need is right here. -D.
