CHOICE Review

This volume follows a format typical of the "Twayne's Studies in Short Fiction" series. Cochran's penetrating examination of Beckett's short fiction constitutes the main part of the work. Next, the writer is scrutinized, explicated partly by Beckett himself, and partly through selected contemporaries. The final section is given over to the views of critics. A chronology, bibliography, and index complete the work. Although Beckett is probably better known for his plays, he wrote short fiction throughout his literary life. Consequently, as Cochran points out, the relationship between his short fiction and his work in other genres is "intimate and interdependent." Cochran is at pains to present Beckett's short fiction as "accessible and even primarily addressed to readers at great remove from centers of academic and artistic fashion." This, perhaps, is a little optimistic, as Beckett's work, generally, is not that accessible to the nonspecialist. There is no wish, however, to denigrate Cochran's excellent study. He has produced a well-balanced treatment of Beckett as a major, though frequently enigmatic, writer of short fiction. The book should, at least, improve accessibility for students of English literature.-J. A. Wiseman, Trent University
