Booklist Review

Two new entries in Twayne's Studies in Short Fiction series follow the format established by predecessors in the series.Sean O'Faolain, who died in 1991 at age 91, was one of the premier Irish short story writers of this century. In part one of this survey, Butler proceeds through O'Faolain's many stories, examining the techniques by which he worked out his primary themes, which include the imprint of Catholicism on Ireland's consciousness and the effect of the civil strife of the 1920s not only on the nation but also on individuals involved. To convey O'Faolain's ideas about writing, part two gathers commentary in the form of an essay, a book preface, an interview, and a memoir excerpt. Part three compiles a selection of particularly relevant critical pieces about him. O. Henry stories are anthologized everywhere, but there remains doubt in many critics' eyes as to his true literary worth. Current-Garcia submits that there is artistry involved in an O. Henry story, and in part one of his overview, he analyzes the experiences--growing up in the South, incarceration for bank fraud, and so on--that helped form his talent. Critical writings about O. Henry round out this workmanlike appraisal. ~--Brad Hooper
