CHOICE Review
In keeping with a recent trend in Cortazar criticism, Stavans (Amherst College), like Terry Peavler (Julio Cortazar, CH, Oct'90), concentrates on the short fiction of the Argentine master, at the expense of his much-vaunted novels, especially Hopscotch (CH, Jul'67). Stavan's study, following the Twayne format for this series, is made up of three sections. Part 1 ("The Short Fiction"), divided into ten subparts, analyzes about 100 short stories more or less chronologically and in the context of Cortazar's life--from his early years in Argentina through his voluntary exile in France and his ideological commitment to the Cuban and Nicaraguan revolutions. Part 2 ("The Writer") comprises three pieces: an examination of the short-story genre, a treatise on fantastic literature in the River Plate countries, and a letter to the Cuban critic Roberto Fernandez Retamar (on the sociopolitical role of the writer). Part 3 ("The Critics") contains two articles: one on the early fiction (1945-66), especially End of the Game, and one on the later fiction (1967-83), especially Octaedra. All titles in English and Spanish. Stavans includes a five-page chronology, an eight-page bibliography of primary and secondary sources, and seven pages of notes. Upper-division undergraduates and above. J. Walker Queen's University at KingstonNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
