Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Policing today is more professional than it has ever been in U.S. history. Yet we are reminded by well-publicized beatings that brutality continues. The question is why. To understand how and why brutality occurs and how it might be prevented, the author covers the following issues: Chapters include: Is Police Brutality a Serious Problem? What Factors Contribute to Police Brutality? How Does Police Brutality Affect Society? How Can Police Brutality Be Reduced?

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Booklist Review

Gr. 9^-12. This entry in the Current Controversies series begins with the 1997 case of Abner Louima, who was sodomized and beaten by officers from the seventieth precinct in Brooklyn, New York. Subsequent articles discuss the Louima case and others that reveal police brutality, including the case of Rodney King. Initial articles address the question, Is police brutality a serious problem? Others explore contributing factors, effects on society, and what can be done to reduce occurrences. Several articles include mention of a "blue wall of silence" that keeps police officers from "telling" on one another and New York City mayor Giuliani's "zero tolerance" policy, which mandates that every law, no matter how minor, be enforced. Although the articles express the opinions of a wide variety of individuals and organizations, the police viewpoint is noticeably missing. A sobering examination of a complex issue.
