Booklist Review

Gr. 9^-12. Don't discard the 1994 version of this title, which included several lively debates about popular culture, from rap to Madonna, as well as discussions of education and intellectual freedom. This time, the controversies are as crucial to teens, but the discussion is heavier, as scholars, political activists, and religious leaders focus on social issues of diversity, including abortion, homosexuality, welfare reform, and school prayer, as well as bilingual education and funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. There's lots about political correctness (has the threat been exaggerated?) and about the role of religion. Conservative Linda Chavez has two articles, against bilingual education and against multiculturalism. All the contributions are recent, and as always, in the Opposing Viewpoint series, there are unobtrusive discussion questions and wide-ranging bibliographies. --Hazel Rochman
