Booklist Review

Gr. 8^-12. As usual for new editions of Opposing Viewpoints titles, these two volumes (updated from 1989 editions) contain completely new, more recent articles reprinted from a variety of sources and expressing views that range from the ultraconservative to the radical. American Values considers such issues as the question of what values should be upheld, changing values (the work ethic and religion in public schools, for example), family and religious values, and materialism. The Third World examines such issues as why the Third World is poor and how it can achieve development, whether democracy can work there, and the U.S. role. Encased in the well-regarded series' familiar format, with excellent documentation and suggestions for further information, these books will be valuable for student research and report writing. --Sally Estes
