Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

First Published in 1994. Educators will welcome this cohesive and comprehensive volume on the research and practice of teaching English as a second language (TESOL). The author, director of the TESOL program at Fordham University Graduate School of Education, provides a holistic view of the field-its practical and philosophical considerations. Of particular interest is the coverage of such new research areas as ESL literacy, cultural literacy, thinking in a second language (TSL), and pragmatic writing.

Includes indexes.

CHOICE Review

This broad-based source introduces theoretical approaches to ESL. Beginning chapters treat learning styles, cultural diversity, methods for developing proficiency, and ESL at all grade levels, from preschool through college. Carrasquillo includes programs (from holistic to immersion); approaches, such as whole language; strategies for developing listening, speaking, and literacy skills; and teaching in special-education classes. Each chapter begins with an extensive essay and is followed by a list of references from monographs and journals. These include early seminal works as well as recent publications (1992 the latest). The brief subject index covers broad categories only; there is, however, an extensive author index. Bibliographies such as Wallace Goldstein's Teaching English As a Second Language (CH, May'76) provide a wealth of background material; Carrasquillo provides the contextual framework. A list of resources for ESL educators with directory information caps this useful purchase for libraries that serve ESL programs. General and academic libraries. E. B. Nibley; American University
