Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This handbook presents the views of those who believe violence in the media causes violent behavior and those who remain unconvinced that any such relationship exists, and examines the results of studies on violence in the media and recommendations for its control.

The controversial relationship between violent behavior in American society and violent acts portrayed in the media--motion pictures, television, pop music, and video games--forms the subject of this reference work.

Violence and the Media provides a section on legal data, opinions, and documents, and provides a close-up look at the legislative issues surrounding violence and the media. It is a vital resource for high school and college students, legislators, and concerned laypersons.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-A comprehensive, thought-provoking resource. After a thorough and interesting overview that addresses the issue in relation to motion pictures, television, music, and video games, the book offers biographical sketches of 19 key figures, such as Jack Valenti and Senator Paul Simon. An extensive section of documents and opinions includes excerpts from laws and regulations, court cases, policy statements, research reports, and opinions about TV violence. A directory of organizations offers addresses, phone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses, along with a brief summary of their activities and a list of their publications. The volume concludes with a well-written glossary and thorough index. For those who want to dig deeper, the extensive bibliography offers both print and nonprint sources.-Marilyn Makowski, Greenwood High School, SC (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Newton's excellent handbook will enhance any reference collection. Material in this field dates quickly, but this book can serve permanently as a historical benchmark of where the field stood 1996. A solid and serviceable first chapter gives a competent overview of violence and the media. It is a balanced and fair essay that attempts to give both sides of the arguments, especially the crucial issue of causation. One shortcoming is that a definition of violence (or rather the problem of a definition of violence) should be addressed earlier and with more force. The issue of confusing appropriate aggressive behavior (e.g., assertiveness training) with inappropriate violent behavior needs more attention. The chapter "Chronology of Violence in the U.S. (1704-1996)" is an attempt to be helpful, but few communication scholars would agree with the decision to omit the invention of the telegraph. Biographical sketches of key figures in the field are probably the least useful section, while "Documents and Opinions," "Court Cases," "Policy Statements," and "Research Reports" are invaluable aids. The book concludes with a directory of organizations, a very sound list of selected print resources, and a less robust list of nonprint resources. The glossary and thorough index will be especially helpful to newcomers to the field. Essential for courses or conferences in this field, and for all libraries. R. E. Sutton emeritus, American University
