School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up‘As in other volumes in the series, this book presents opposing positions on a contemporary topic. International and domestic terrorism, hate groups, and state-militia organizations are all included. Issues are: "Should Americans Fear Urban Terrorism?"; "Which Groups Pose an Urban Terrorist Threat?"; "Do the Media Encourage Terrorism?"; and "Do Antiterrorism Measures Threaten Civil Liberties?" Authors include notables, such as Nat Hentoff, Terry Anderson, and William Raspberry, as well as other journalists and experts in the field. Most articles are short and, for the most part, well written. Predictably, the most attention is given to the World Trade Center bombing in New York City in 1993 and the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Three entries deal with the Unabomber. The Iran hostage crisis, the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 to Beirut in 1985, and alleged instances of governmental terrorism, such as the disaster in Waco, Texas, are also mentioned. The book does not focus on the violent incidents themselves, however, but rather on the various components of a complicated issue. This is its major strength. The selections expose readers to the complexities of our society that contribute to frightening possibilities, whether actual or perceived. They also challenge YAs with well-reasoned positions.‘Marilyn Makowski, Greenwood High School, SC (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Booklist Review

Gr. 9-12. Urban terrorism in the U.S., as witnessed by the World Trade Center bombing and the massive Oklahoma City explosion, appears to be on the rise. On the other hand, these two high-profile incidents are unconnected, and neither would seem to be a part of a well-organized conspiracy. In its standard point-counterpoint format, this new Current Controversy title examines terrorism from multiple perspectives. Twenty-eight essays, brief, accessible, and quite recent, address four basic questions: Should Americans fear urban terrorism? Which groups pose a threat? Do the media encourage terrorism? And do antiterrorism measures threaten civil liberties? The very number of essays emphasizes the complexity of the issues and encourages thoughtful consideration. A list of organizations and a bibliography are appended. (Reviewed July 1996)1565104110Anne O'Malley
