School Library Journal Review

Gr 8 Up-Consideration of the hero, antihero, and associated deeds, past and present, coming from the writings of a diverse group of award-winning essayists. Readers gain insight into the aura that surrounded such figures as John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, as well as views into Russian and Bedouin culture, a photo essay on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and three fictional explorations into examples of individual heroics. Author minibiographies precede each selection, and there is a scattering of black-and-white photographs throughout. An excellent choice for sparking discussion.-Celia A. Booklist Review

Gr. 7-12. The latest volume in the Icarus World Issues series revolves around the concept that society relies more on media hype than on personal accomplishment to identify its heroes. The nine fiction and nonfiction pieces included provide opportunities for the reader to examine society's criteria for greatness, to explore the notions of hero and anti-hero, and to take a look at heroic deeds in history and today. A book that offers no pat answers but contains plenty of food for reflection. (Reviewed Sept. 15, 1993)0823913848Patricia Braun
