Accelerated Reader is a program based on the fact that students become more motivated to read if they are tested on the content of the books they have read and are rewarded for correct answers. Students read each book, individually take the test on the computer, and receive gratification when they score well. Schools using the Accelerated Reader program have seen a significant increase in reading among their students.

Globally and locally, teens are confronted with a wide variety of social issues and difficult political realities. These titles are excellent for community service learning and tolerance building.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 179-180) and index.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 10 Up-A collection of fiction and nonfiction pieces focusing on life in major cities around the globe. With one exception, all are set during the 20th century. Particularly interesting are selections concerning places that appear frequently in today's news. For example, ``The Landscape of Exile,'' by David Rieff, covers Miami's expatriate Cuban community and its relationship with Havana. Miljenko Jergovi¿c's ``The Tragedy of Clear Nights'' speaks of the desolation of Sarajevo and the efforts of its citizens to flee-anywhere. Other cities covered include Berlin, Los Angeles, and Lahore. The fiction evokes equally strong images, especially Eli Amir's ``Scene of Baghdad, 1950'' and M.F.K. Fisher's ``Stay Me, Oh Comfort Me,'' a tale of Paris in the 1930s. Two selections are photo-essays. While the collection lacks a piece set in East Asia, it still gives a broad, dramatic picture of urban life around the world.-Mary Jo Drungil, Niles Public Library District, IL (c) Copyright 2010.
