CHOICE Review

Levinson here discusses 90 terms pertaining to how people hurt each other physically, emotionally, and socially. Each form of behavior or custom is defined, variant forms in different cultures are described, distribution of the phenomenon is specified, and possible explanations for the behavior are discussed. The emphasis and examples are taken almost exclusively from the non-Western world, and the data are drawn from approximately 100 ethnographic and numerous cross-cultural surveys. Entries are alphabetically arranged, and each is followed by see also references and a bibliography. These references are merged at the end of the volume into a 13-page bibliography. There is an excellent and extensive index. The author, editor of the new series "Encyclopedias of the Human Experience," of which this book is a part, is vice president of Human Relations Area Files, Inc., one of the world's leading institutions for cross-cultural research. Levinson's research and publishing in the areas of ethnicity, social relations, and comparative studies is reflected in the extremely well crafted entries that constitute this title. Highly recommended for larger public libraries and all undergraduate and graduate collections. C. J. Busick; University of Colorado at Boulder
