Booklist Review

Gr. 6^-9. With unexceptional series geography books continually in release, it's refreshing to discover a volume that stands on its own as a fine little history book. Beginning with its geography, then segueing comfortably into a brief yet comprehensive overview of Germany's history and world contributions, this selection from the Modern Nations of the World series is rich in sharp, interesting details. Although consistently positive in tone, the chapters never turn saccharine in their praise of even the most formidable achievements. As impressively, Ayer treads sure-footedly over the topic of international shame brought on the Germans by their Third Reich. Instead of gingerly sidestepping the World War II atrocities, she candidly explores the topic, drawing objectivity from her neutral tone and her inclusion of quotations from former high-ranking Nazis who later acknowledged accountability and expressed regret for their actions. Interspersed throughout each section are well-chosen black-and-white illustrations. There are several appendixes that should effectively save time for student researchers. --Roger Leslie
