Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. In this series, Herda addresses environmental issues in diverse regions of the U.S., detailing the history of various biomes, the effects of past and current agricultural and industrial practices upon land, air, and water quality, and how people can improve the environment. North Central includes information on the prairies, which settlers originally expected to be poor regions for crops because of the lack of trees. Herda explains how America's breadbasket became a dust bowl and how erosion and chemical fertilizers affect the area today. Southeastern describes how public policy and pollution have affected the area's wetlands as well as human health. Each book features many excellent full-color photographs and ends with practical suggestions for action and lists of environmental organizations and agencies. Other volumes in this timely, useful series are listed in the Series Roundup in this issue. ~--Carolyn Phelan
