Gr 7-10-- This succinct, clear recapitulation of the coup fills readers in on the individuals involved, the political issues at stake, and the results of the people's refusal to return to a totalitarian regime. The text is crisp and clear, written in the active voice. The chronological progression adds to an understanding of the unfolding events of this crucial six-day period. Frequent well-placed, full-color and historical black-and-white photographs illustrate the events; a map of the former Soviet Union is both helpful and interesting. Sections set apart on buff-colored paper provide additional background. A good index and brief bibliography round out the summary.
