School Library Journal Review

Gr 7-12-- In an election year, this much-needed resource explains the many factors affecting candidates, politics, and the power of the media. From the fireside chats to the 30-second seduction, the drive to influence voters is well documented, highlighting debates, opinion polls, advertisements, candidates' images, election coverage, and audience control. Unfortunately, it is already dated, because 1992 media coverage has moved into the talk-show circuit, national morning show call-ins, late-night entertainment programs, and even MTV, none of which are mentioned here. However, Sherrow has done an adequate job of covering an ever-changing subject that should be recognized and studied by young people today. --Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, RI (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. With a heated presidential campaign in full swing, students have the perfect opportunity to study the political packaging and media manipulation Sherrow describes in her timely book. In straightforward, well-argued prose, she recounts the history of the media's role in political campaigns--from Jefferson's use of partisan newspapers and FDR's mastery of radio to the televised debates that shaped the Kennedy-Nixon conflict in the 1960s and the 60-second political spots of the Bush-Dukakis campaign in the late 1980s. As the focus continues to shift from the candidate's platform to the candidate's image, future voters will need to be alert to the media's increasing influence. Sherrow's competent overview will help them cut through the hype. To be illustrated with photographs. ~--Candace Smith
