School Library Journal Review

Gr 9-12-The monumental task of overhauling the American health care system is well presented in this up-to-date analysis. Background information illustrates how it evolved through history and how it differs from plans in effect in other countries. Sherrow has done extensive research on this complex issue. She does not offer pat answers to problems, but raises many questions and presents several solutions. The Clinton Health Care Plan is clearly discussed; the author appears to support it. This timely, easy-to-read book includes a list of elements that all plans need to address, a smattering of average-quality black-and-white photographs and political cartoons, and extensive source notes. It would complement Health Care in America (Greenhaven, 1994).-Judy R. Johnston, Auburn High School, WA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Booklist Review

Gr. 7-12. This well-outlined, readable examination of a continuing, national controversy traces the evolution of U.S. health care, the options currently available to the public, and the possible ways in which all citizens might be covered if legislation is forthcoming. Using several fairly well-known examples, Sherrow illustrates why health care continues to be revisited despite past U.S. government attempts to regulate costs and cover all those unable to afford insurance, whatever the reason. Sherrow's information has been rehashed in a variety of media since Clinton began campaigning for the pres~idency, but she does an excellent job of synthesizing the material for young people. Unfortunately, many of her more edifying--and unstable--statistics are not footnoted, and those that are footnoted are more likely to come from the New York Times or popular news magazines than more primary sources.
