School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-9-Greenberg examines several of the more lurid, headline-grabbing acts carried out during the past 25 years, and mentions numerous others. Effective descriptions of major incidents, such as the World Trade Center bombing, are heightened by the inclusion of victims' accounts. Less successful is the narrative, which is occasionally jarring-it jumps back and forth between describing a specific act to discussing the general history of terrorism. The goals of some of the major groups, e.g., the Irish Republican Army and the Palestine Liberation Organization, are clearly explained, but readers will not learn much about the motives of other splinter groups and factions. While the U.S. is the target in most of the accounts, terrorism against other countries is noted. Full-color and black-and-white photographs accentuate the frightening aspects of this problem; chapter headings include words such as ``fear,'' ``menace,'' and ``terror.'' Furthermore, the final chapter warns that the future is likely to hold more instances of such attacks, and that airports are especially vulnerable to them. Elaine Landau's Terrorism (Lodestar, 1992) and Milton Meltzer's The Terrorists (HarperCollins, 1983) cover much of the same material for older children.
