Library Journal Review

Editor Winters's (Hate Crimes, Greenhaven, 1996) volume is the latest in the "Current Controversies" series, which is tailored for high school and junior college report writers. Like others in the series, it is a compilation of articles from a variety of viewpoints, reprinted mostly from periodicals such as Time and Newsweek. Topics in this work include cigarette smoking as a gateway to other drugs, MTV and the drug culture, and evidence that national concern about the issue is unjustifiably exagerated. There is a good index and list of contact organizations. This work is similar to Drug Abuse (1994) in the same publisher's "Opposing Viewpoints" series, though the "Current Controversies" format is larger and Drug Abuse's scope is not limited to teens. Public libraries can't go wrong with this solid entry.‘A. Arro Smith, San Marcos P.L., Tex. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up‘A collection of divergent opinions on a current social problem. Chapters address specific issues like the pervasiveness of substance abuse among teens, causes of addiction, the effectiveness of government regulation, and prevention strategies. Articles, essays, and speech excerpts are drawn from a variety of sources from President Clinton and former FDA Commissioner David Kessler to college students to the Wall Street Journal. The entries are short‘an average of five pages‘and are well written and well organized. The dense text is broken up by shaded quotation boxes that highlight points made on that particular page. A solid series entry.‘Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
