School Library Journal Review

Gr 7-12-- A timely and dynamic occupational guide. The Lees begin with an interesting history of firefighting in America, and then carefully explain career opportunities today and ways for readers to determine if they are suited to such work. Required education and training are detailed, and practical information on landing a job is provided. Fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services are among the jobs described. There are chapters on women in the field and on the future. The black-and-white photos show many kinds of firefighters and equipment, adding greatly to the writing. Most of them are of good quality, but some are a little dark. Further reading and a listing of pertinent organizations and publications are appended. Better written and more current than Ronny J. Coleman's Opportunities in Fire Protection Services (VGM, 1983), this book will be useful in career-counseling and library collections. --Diane P.
