Accelerated Reader is a program based on the fact that students become more motivated to read if they are tested on the content of the books they have read and are rewarded for correct answers. Students read each book, individually take the test on the computer, and receive gratification when they score well. Schools using the Accelerated Reader program have seen a significant increase in reading among their students.

Globally and locally, teens are confronted with a wide variety of social issues and difficult political realities. These titles are excellent for community service learning and tolerance building.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 167-168) and index.

Booklist Review

Gr. 7-12. Another book in the Icarus World Issues series, this examines the role of sports in society, suggesting that the games each society plays disclose its "mentality and motivation." A compilation of short stories, essays, and nonfiction excerpts from a diverse group of contemporary writers, the multicultural collection offers insights into humankind's fascination with sports, with selections on such activities as Turkish lice racing, Chinese football, and Spanish bull fighting revealing each sport's beautiful and ignoble aspects. Raising questions about whether sports are a reflection of our inner selves, this combination of fact and fiction offers a good change of pace from sports how-tos. A glossary and a bibliography are appended. (Reviewed Apr. 1, 1993)0823913783Mary Romano Marks
