Accelerated Reader is a program based on the fact that students become more motivated to read if they are tested on the content of the books they have read and are rewarded for correct answers. Students read each book, individually take the test on the computer, and receive gratification when they score well. Schools using the Accelerated Reader program have seen a significant increase in reading among their students.

Globally and locally, teens are confronted with a wide variety of social issues and difficult political realities. These titles are excellent for community service learning and tolerance building.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 180-182) and index.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-9-- The 12 selections in this volume comprise an odd collection of essays, autobiographies, and short stories. Each piece explores or explains an Eastern philosophy or life style or the clash of differing world views. Le Ly Hayslip's ``The Happy Buddha'' and Ravinder Randhawa's ``Time Traveler'' both focus on the difficulties of being Asian in a Western nation. Pico Iyer writes on ``Coca-Colonization and the McRevolution.'' From Joseph Campbell comes a lengthy selection, ``Human Rights in Oriental Beliefs.'' The Dalai Lama, Robert Thurman, and Aung Aung Taik describe the customs and beliefs of Tibetan and Burmese monks. Wolfgang Schivelbusch of Germany expresses his theory that the search for spices drove Europeans beyond their borders. And interspersed are short stories from Lydia Minatoya, Harumi Murakami, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and Susan Minot. To be read for assignments or useful for reports, each selection will have to be indexed, a chore that many will understandably judge to be not worth the effort since the scope here is so broad that it is easy to miss the point. The bibliography would be more accurately labeled ``Further Reading,'' and the glossary is an insult, including words such as ``garish'' and ``draconian'' that high school readers can be expected to know. --Susan Middleton, LaJolla Country Day School, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 7-12. As schools implement curricula that explore cultural diversity, teachers and librarians are finding an increasing need for information that compares cultures. Part of the Icarus World Issues series, East-West helps answer the need for such material. The volume features short stories and nonfiction selections by authors as diverse as the Dalai Lama and Joseph Campbell. The writers are also of many nationalities: for example, Lydia Minatoya is Asian American, Aung Aung Taik is of Burmese descent, Ravinder Randhawa is Indian. Provocative and challenging, the selections may be used separately to introduce a particular culture or together to explore differing beliefs and values. Biographical notes and photographs of the authors, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography of recent young adult and adult sources are included. (Reviewed Dec. 15, 1992)0823913759Chris Sherman
