School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up‘This compilation of previously published articles has one major mark against it from the start‘lack of timeliness. The first selection, "The Future of the Internet: An Overview," is a reprint of a July 1995 article. Its predictions look forward to 1996 and knowledgeable readers can see that they did not come true. The rest of the articles are from 1996, which is still a long time ago in Internet years. On the positive side, the book contains an interesting mix of articles previously published either in print or electronically. The book shows opposing viewpoints on a variety of issues, including education, commerce, addiction, and privacy. Unfortunately, the point-counterpoint articles are not placed one after the other, but are scattered throughout the book. One other flaw is that the chapter titles are not the same as the titles of the articles as they originally appeared. Therefore, citation inconsistencies may cause problems for students doing research. The book has an extensive bibliography as well as a list of organizations to contact for further information on the issues discussed.‘Yapha Nussbaum Mason, Brentwood Lower School, Los Angeles (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 9^-12. As one writer wryly notes, there are many possible models for the National Information Infrastructure, as many "as there are writers interested in the topic." Views in this At Issue series entry run the gamut from gushingly positive to more cautious and pessimistic, with a roughly even break between positive and negative commentary. "The Information Superhighway already offers dozens of new products and services that will greatly improve the overall quality . . . of our everyday lives," announces one report; others echo familiar concerns about invasions of privacy, security matters, and excessive Internet use as a behavior disorder. The uncut articles and speeches originating from 1995 to 1997 have an academic tone suitable for sophisticated student researchers. This title is similar to the Opposing Viewpoints series book The Information Highway (1996), which has more, mostly shorter and easier to read, selections. A bibliography, a list of organizations, and a glossary extend the text. --Anne O'Malley
