CHOICE Review

This guide is written to aid the amateur naturalist and botanist who wishes to be able to identify the more common species of marine plants of the Caribbean Sea, including the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, southern Florida, and Bermuda. The authors do not aim for completeness--they include only 209 species of algae and seagrasses of the more than 600 reported from the region. Instead, they have presented those that are either locally abundant, and therefore likely to be encountered, or those that have certain striking characteristics. Each entry consists of a brief description and taxonomic information. The real strength of the book lies in the excellent color photographs of each species. The entries are arranged by color, ranging from green to brown to red among the algae, with a separate, much shorter section for seagrasses. This book is intended as a field guide, not an exhaustive study of marine plants of the region. As such, it would be most useful for libraries that are near the regions it covers, or support programs in this region. For these libraries, though, it would be an invaluable resource. -S. H.
