Read the biographical essays written by individuals who have gotten exciting, well-paying jobs by preparing themselves with a solid background in the mathematical sciences. Your students will see how these individuals use their mathematical sciences training on a daily basis in their work, often relying on the general problem-solving skills they have acquired in their mathematics courses. Those who studied statistics & computer science as well as mathematics, tell how their training in these disciplines helped them advance in their careers. The degrees earned by these authors range from bachelors to masters to the PhD, in approximately equal numbers. Many with a bachelor's degree in mathematics have earned graduate degrees in a related field, often statistics or computer science. Students should not overlook the articles in the Appendix that are reprinted from the MAA's magazine for students, Math Horizons. These articles provide valuable advice on looking for a job & the expectations of industry.

CHOICE Review

This new edition of 101 Careers in Mathematics (2nd ed., 2002; 1st ed., CH, Mar'97, 34-3917) includes 25 new entries and now contains 146 profiles. Contributors briefly describe their careers after receiving a baccalaureate degree in mathematics. The testimonies show that, beyond this base in mathematics, commonality disappears: a great variety of career paths stem from a first degree in mathematics. Some individuals have no further schooling, others obtain graduate degrees in mathematics, and still others obtain advanced degrees in fields such as medicine, law, library science, business, computer science, information technology, and natural resources. Some contributors include advice to those contemplating mathematics degrees. For example, they point out that mathematics teaches people how to learn and be organized and logical. The sketches are informal and too casual at times; their hasty composition makes some entries difficult to read. Writing errors abound. Not to be missed are the appendixes covering steps for getting a job, interviewing advice, and in particular, two articles that contrast mathematics careers in academe with those in the private or governmental sectors. These articles suggest academic efforts could better prepare students for industrial careers. Valuable for career collections at institutions offering bachelor's degrees in mathematics. --William R. Lee, Minnesota State University, Mankato
