Library Journal Review
LJ's review of the English edition called Rushdie's latest novel his "best work in years" (LJ 12/95). Combining metaphor and history, this powerful, complex saga set in India covers several generations whose colorful family members trace their ancestry to Portuguese-Jewish spice-ship explorers. The spice trade brings prosperity to the families but also violent squabbles over inheritance and religious and cultural traditions. Rushdie's enchanting novel is hard to put down.
