School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up-- Two books for browsers. Although there is chronological presentation of a sort, one can dip anywhere into either volume and enjoy the illustrations--some in color and by better-known 19th-century artists of the West. In addition, there are many black-and-white prints, steel cuts, and--later--photographs. Information is presented in explanatory sequences accompanying specific illustrations, and in the brief introductory paragraphs to topic sections. These volumes give only the most general information and impressions, so they are limited for school research--but as springboard materials to further study they could be useful. Suggested readings are minimal; many are out of print. The keys to illustrations are next to useless except for scholars. Artists' names are not included in the key; thus, one gets no idea who painted some of these pictures, particularly George Caleb Bingham's famous work that shows Daniel Boone leading settlers through the Cumberland Gap. Also, while both books have timelines of major events, there is no particular correlation between these dated entries and the contents of the books. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 9-12. A pictorial record of Indian-white relations from 1789 to 1890 features paintings and drawings created by Euro-Americans that are held by the Library of Congress. Generally, each double-page spread focuses on one topic, such as Black Hawk's War or the Santee Uprising, combining a cursory history with related artistic interpretations showing battles, individual leaders, and life-styles of different tribes. Because artistic portrayals were often inaccurate and misleading, Smith endeavors to include works that were authentic and relatively objective and to supply captions that point out known errors. Still, a work that combines superficial text with white artists' perceptions will have limited usefulness. Two chronologies are included. ~--Karen Hutt
