From the new series American Albums from the Collections of the Library of Congress, this volume offers a visually oriented history--1492 to 1775--of the exploration and colonization of what is now the continental United States. The many black-and-white reproductions of prints, engravings, paintings, and maps of the period are accompanied by very full captions and a brief text offering historical perspective of the people, events, and lands depicted. Three timelines summarize significant events. Libraries will find the book a good source of black-and-white illustrations from the period and a serviceable summary of its history.
