CHOICE Review

Modern political science owes a profound debt to Eulau, one of its intellectual progenitors. A pioneer in the quest for a scientific study of politics, he has been at the forefront of the discipline for the past half century. In this massive and challenging book, remarkable in character as well as content, he presents an extraordinary account of his personal and professional odyssey. Eulau's unorthodox book, by no means an autobiography, directs attention toward an exploration of "the micro-macro manifold" as linked to his personal experiences. Much of the story of US political science is incorporated in Eulau's narrative, which is further illuminated by discussion of the works and personalities of virtually all the major social scientists of the last 50 years. Eulau is characteristically articulate and probing, precise in his terminology, fresh with his insights, and sturdily argumentative. He challenges readers to think about basic questions and avoid the specialization and fragmentation he sees in political science today. A rarity, this book constitutes required reading and discussion by all serious scholars in the field. J. D. Martz Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus
