CHOICE Review

Wiggins presents a critical report on typical measurement practices, as traditionally experienced by school children, in a nontechnical discussion of social and philosophical issues related to testing in American schools. As a discussion starter the text is excellent, though it does not present a mainstream view of measurement. Wiggins provides examples, autobiographical anecdotes, and extensive quotations to support the idea of reforming the assessment component of modern education. He often concludes that testing is to blame for many of our school's current problems. Unfortunately, he does not always balance his argument or offer reasonable, technical solutions; some references seem to be out of context and the author appears to give a personal more than a professional treatment. A list of references follows each chapter, and the book contains a comprehensive index. The reading level is not too difficult and does not require technical or statistical training to understand. Appropriate for college students, faculty, and general readers interested in education, psychology, or related social sciences where testing and measurement practice is of interest. W. S. Lang; University of South Florida
