Library Journal Review

Having spent five years and $12 million developing a world digital database, Hammond is now sensibly making use of it to tailor atlases for every possible atlas-user niche. First came the flagship Hammond Atlas of the World ( LJ 1/93). Now we have the concise edition and the Explorer, the atlas for precollege-age users. The paring down has been done most drastically in the area of the index--the flagship atlas has 115,000 names; the concise atlas, 60,000; and the Explorer , 6000. Then comes the size: the flagship is 303 pages long and 14 inches tall; the concise is 232 pages, 12 inches; and the Explorer is 120 pages, also 12 inches. The number of maps ranges from about 150, to 120, to 100. Preliminary material (e.g., text, world thematic maps, as differentiated from the area maps) is also cut, especially when going from the concise to the Explorer. Although the colors of the maps tend to be a bit gaudy in the case of the thematics, they are clear and easy to read. The prices are reasonable for both atlases. The Explorer is appropriate for students from grades 5 to 10; the concise for secondary students, personal libraries, and small branch libraries.-- Mary L. School Library Journal Review

A good, economical choice for home and student use, the Hammond Explorer Atlas of the World contains insufficient depth of information or indexing for reference use. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
