CHOICE Review

It takes courage to write a scholarly book about relations between the US and the Caribbean over the past two centuries. There is so much to cover and so many different ways to interpret the subject that only the boldest of academicians undertake such an enterprise. With this study, Maingot (Florida International Univ.), a sociologist and Caribbeanist, has joined that select group. Critics will find plenty to carp about. For example, Maingot has remarkably little to say on Cuba, surely the single most important island when talking about US interest in the Caribbean. Moreover, Maingot assigns great significance to the submarine warfare experience of WW II in US/Caribbean relations, a topic and time period usually ignored by other scholars. In spite of these potential complaints, Maingot's book offers exceptional insight into modern Caribbean relations, particularly on issues that rose to the surface after the end of the Cold War. For the moment, however, it is the best survey available. All levels. J. A. Lewis Western Carolina University
