School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-These series entries target reluctant readers and provide accessible information about problem-solving and communication in parent/teen relationships. Draimin shares specifics about AIDS and HIV, explains how the virus is and is not contracted, offers tips on prevention, describes social effects on the family, encourages dealing with feelings honestly and seeking professional help, and discusses facing the death of a parent and its aftermath. English offers some reasons why parents may not have learned the new language, shows practical ways for readers to help them become proficient, and deals realistically with their own feelings and the stress that results from the situation. Material is presented in a clear and straightforward manner, using fictionalized incidents/experiences to illustrate points of emphasis. Several posed black-and-white and full-color photographs accentuate the text. These titles are good introductions to Moira Davison Reynolds's Coping with an Immigrant Parent (1992) and Draimin's Coping When a Parent Has AIDS (1993, both Rosen), which cover similar ground but offer more information in text-rich, non-pictorial formats.-Celia A.
