School Library Journal Review
Gr 7-12-- Two British imports that are concise; generously illustrated with informatively captioned photos, maps, and reproductions--some of which are full color; and studded with cogent quotations and crisp biographical sketches. Short chapters cover specific aspects of the subjects at hand. Chrisp examines fascism's roots, its rise in Italy and Nazi Germany, Franco and the Spanish civil war, varieties of fascism (unfortunately, no Americans are included), its links with business, and the type of people who joined or voted for its parties. He agrees with contemporary historians that ``big business'' did not control fascism although it did give support. Ross discusses Stalin's rise to power, the famous five-year plans, the Soviet Union's role in world affairs during this period, and the end of the regime. He concludes that ``Stalinism had an immense effect,'' even if he can't bring himself to agree with either those who see the man as one of the greatest criminals of all time or those who view him merely as a ``tool of history.'' Both volumes are thought provoking and should encourage readers to seek more information. --David A. Lindsey, Lakewood Junior/Senior High School, WA (c) Copyright 2010.
