K-Gr 3‘Mediopollito may be only "half-a-chick" but he is twice as clever as all of the others. To help his friend Pedrito collect money owed them by the king, Mediopollito stores the waters of the river in his throat and, upon being denied their wages, he opens his beak and floods the palace, drowning the cruel and selfish ruler. This simple folktale of friendship and loyalty originated in Spain but has many Latin American variants. This Puerto Rican retelling has a straightforward text and uses rich jewel colors of purple, green, and red in its square, bordered illustrations. An appealing version of a much-loved tale.‘Marisa Parish, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
