School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up‘A thorough if somewhat dry study. The attractive, bright lavender cover and the brevity of the text will make this book jump off the shelf, but the internal black-and-white photos are small and poorly reproduced. Drawing extensively from published reports and statistics, Nardo addresses why more teens have sex than in earlier decades; the socioeconomic problems of teen parents; the role of education in preventing teen pregnancy; and the changing societal attitudes about gay teens. In an enlightening epilogue, the author points out discrepancies and ways to evaluate information in sexual surveys and studies, which is an important aspect to consider when examining any statistical data. The bibliography is up to date and includes popular journals such as Teen, Glamour, and People Weekly along with more scholarly publications. Despite minor concerns regarding the dull writing style, Teen Sexuality deserves a place on your shelves alongside such titles as Sex and America's Teenagers (Guttmacher Institute, 1994) and Karin Swisher's Teenage Sexuality (Greenhaven, 1994).‘Susan R.
