Booklist Review
In the World Leaders series, this biography of a charismatic revolutionary leader is adulatory, but also candid about Guevara's failures. After giving a brief glimpse of his early life in a middle-class liberal Argentinian family and his lifelong struggle with asthma, Kellner focuses on Guevara's politics, discussing his central role in the Cuban revolution: first, militarily in guerrilla warfare and, later, in economic planning, the establishment of a socialist society, and diplomacy. Opposed to U.S. imperialism and dissatisfied with the Soviets, Guevara tried to encourage revolution in Third World countries-- he was unsuccessful in the Congo, and then in Bolivia he was killed. Kellner quotes fervent followers who saw Guevara as a saintly hero and critics who saw him as naive and dogmatic; the author then assesses Guevara's lasting legacy as a symbol of a dedicated revolutionary fighting for moral ideals. The bibliography is longer than is usual for the series, but there are no footnotes. The treatment includes numerous photographs, many of Guevara; chronology; index. Gr.7-12.
