Booklist Review

There are many adult sources that treat basic baby care in more detail than Beyer's book, giving fuller attention to developmental concerns and parental responsibilities. Beyer does, however, try to place matters that concern new mothers within a broad context of teenage experience. Her book is an overview at best, but she stresses the importance of parental guidance in many aspects of a child's development. While information on health and nutrition is superficial, the author's thoughts on discipline and parent-child communication will be helpful, as will her safety tips, sample budget, and suggestions for finding an alternative part-time caregiver. Her "Think and Talk About" sections spell "classroom" use, though her style is ~friendly and informal enough to attract independent readers. Some fill-in-the-blanks are included, as is a brief listing of health hot-line numbers. Index. Gr. 7-10. --Stephanie Zvirin
